And Now We Know How Truly Doomed the Mets Really Were
If your GM has it in him to actively cheat on his wife with a girl like this, your team is not going to win championships.
(I know the article says he's taking a leave from ESPN, and that he has since been fired...this article had the most gorey details, though.)

underdogs
elections are coming!
from the 2009 voter guide, the candidates in their own words
1. Maura DeLuca, running for Public Advocate:
What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?
Today millions are being thrown out of work as the capitalist rulers seek to make working people pay for the crisis of their system. The ruling class is launching a frontal assault on our basic living conditions, from jobs and wages to pensions, health care, housing and essential services. Working people need to answer these attacks. Only through a working class revolution to take power out of the hands of the exploiters and war makers can we then begin to reorganize the economy and all social relations, from top to bottom, in the interests of workers and farmers.
2. Jimmy McMillan, running for Mayor:
What is the most important issue in the city you would address if elected?Rent Is Too Damn High Rent-Freeze-Rent-Reduction-Rent Roll back. (People must have money to spent.) Our plan will create 3 to 6 Million Jobs that will generate a 3 to 6 Billion Dollar surplus. Do the math an estimated 10 Million New Yorkers of Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Queens will no longer have to put up with being harass by "Landlord(s)" again. Not only the Bailout and Stimulus will give us the opportunity to lower rent. Landlords with Violations, Failed to Register building(s), and Other...gives us another reason to lower rent. The party is over. Rent Is Too Damn High.
3. David Casavis, running for Manhattan Borough President:
What other important issues would you address if elected?
Instead of eliminating this highly paid job, politicians added perks to it. This is like hanging ornaments on a dead Christmas tree. The tree is dead. It has been dead for 20 years. Our City is cutting budgets and employees. It is far better that voters eliminate politicians, than politicians eliminate voters.

Help Support Lighthouse International
Hi, guys. Sorry to use the blog for solicitation purposes, but I wanted to invite everyone to a charity auction I am helping to organize for Lighthouse International. This is an organization that provides services to the blind and partially sighted, dedicated to fighting vision loss through prevention, treatment, and empowerment. I serve on the Young Leadership Committee and we are holding our 5th Annual Fall Fundraiser next THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, at Greenhouse, an environmentally conscious club in SoHo.
The event will include food and an OPEN BAR provided by Dogfish Head Brewery, VeeV, Domaine De Canton, and Osprey Dominion Winery. We will also be raffling and auctioning off items from Sony, Estee Lauder, Allure, the Nets, Knicks, Yankees, David Letterman, and much more.
The money will go toward helping children attend the Lighthouse Children's Music Program, which promotes the study of music despite the obstacles posed by vision loss.
I know tickets are a bit pricey at $75, but if you view this as your big night out for the week, maybe you can swing it. It's a good cause, there's free booze and food, and you might win something in the raffle. If you are tied up on Thursday or if it's too expensive, I'd be happy to buy raffle tickets for anyone wishing to donate.
Tickets are available online at www.lighthouse.org/cocktail or by phone at (212) 821-9554.
Thanks so much, guys.

Lewis Black gets it!
Excerpt from review of his new stand-up concert movie:
Birthdays shouldn’t be celebrated after the age of 22, he declares, because that’s when physical decline begins.
This is just an alternate take on my position that there's no reason to age past 23, a position I first conceived of walking the campus of Caltech in the silent hours of the night/early morning, and first professed about 2 years later on Halloween to an FIT girl dressed as a bumble bee to glazed effect.

Barack Obama: Nobel Laureate??
Not to be all Hannity, but isn't this just crazy? The prize stipulates that it should "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses." He hasn't done anything and he's overseeing 2 wars.
Even the committee said he hadn't accomplished anything but had rather given the award "to promote what he stands for and the positive processes that have started now." Somewhere Fred Armisen is scrambling to update his sketch tomorrow.
I think he'd better come up with an elegant way of declining, that could be a truly pimp move and the only spin to prevent the do-nothing meme from sticking.
