I learned at dinner last night that baby carrots are grown-up carrots chopped into smaller pieces and peeled. This morning Wikepedia told me that most baby carrots (75%) come from Bakersfield.
baby corn is actually baby corn. although, did you know that originally, all corn was the size of baby corn and early humans were able to cultivate corn so that it would grow larger and look like the corn we are used to today.
also, it's only the prepackaged and peeled baby carrot "nuggets" that are adult carrots. you can buy real baby carrots (in all colors) with tops on in some markets. also, carrots were not originally orange. they ran the gamut from white to purple, but there were no orange carrots. i guess people just decided orange was somehow more appealing.
Holla Bakersfield!
