I was in bed sick...watching the game. Thinking...there is no way the Rays can blow this game. Up 7-0...2 outs in the bottom of the 7th. Then, the wheels come off the Rays freight train. It was a pretty impressive improbable comeback. The RAYS looked shocked and in disbelief. Their spirit may be broken. I can't believe I am saying this. But Red Sox in 7. How it pains me! Hope I am wrong. It is fortunate to have Beckett and Lester going back-to-back. I love baseball.
I love the Joe Maddon line about him staring out onto the field.
I will admit this...after Papi's homerun...I got the same strange feeling I had after Tony Clark's hit down the line went into the stands...preventing the Yanks winning game 5. Say it ain't so!
An unfortunate part of that Simmons article is his description of Fenway crowds because it is absolutely accurate. I went to two games in the ALDS and monday's Game 3 of the ALCS before last night's Game 5. In each of those previous three games most of the crowd was there just to say that they were there, like it was a social event. Only when it looked like the Sox were set for elimination were the harder core fans able to go to the game. Right off the bat in the 1st inning there were chants and encouragements coming from all over the stadium. The crowd wanted so badly for a reason to explode. For 6.5 innings we got nothing. And yet there was still a fat guy in the right field corner ripping off his shirt and waving it around to try to get the corwd jacked up. That stuff doesn't happen anymore when the Sox are playing early in a series or are in control late in a series. The exact same thing happened in last year's ALCS when the crowd sucked for Games 1 & 2, but was incredible for Games 6 & 7 as the Sox were coming back from a 3-1 series deficit.
For 6.5 innings I was watching the Red Sox play the worst game I could ever remember them playing. That's not an exaggeration. When it was over, it was the greatest game I have ever attended. I'm not making any predictions about what's going to happen going forward. The Sox are an excellent team, and have somehow become a magical one, but still have a lot of problems. I'm just happy that the Sox didn't just roll over to the Rays, and I'm happy that last night happened.
Unfortunately, I think that's pretty much par for the course in the postseason now, especially when you're talking about "glamour" teams like the Sox are now and the Yanks were in the late 90s. Can't wait to see all the stars of "Fringe" and "Sarah Connor Chronicles" enjoying box seats in the World Series!
I remember being surprised at the number of empty seats at Fenway when they were getting drubbed in Game 3, which definitely wasn't the case last night. Honestly, if you're getting field level seats for a game like that, you ought to be shackled in.
rays in six.

ReplyDeleteMy first order of business today was betting my co-worker lunch that they would win the World Series.
ReplyDeleteWhich they will. So at least I'll get lunch out of it. Not that I'll feel much like eating.
