For landing the best pitcher in baseball for the bargain basement price of one toolsy CF with no plate discipline, two potential #4 starters, and an 18 year old kid.
As I told them when I was interviewing, there's no team in the league that would benefit more from acquiring Santana than the Mets. He fills their single biggest vulnerability. The bullpen is still an issue, but this unquestionably makes the Mets one of the strongest few of teams in the NL.
Don't worry about the lineup. Reyes will be fine. Wright will be fine. Beltran will be fine. Delgado's power will probably never again be what it was, but if you look at his post all-star game stats from last year, they're actually quite nice. That's all you need when you can send out a rotation like Santana, Pedro, Maine, and Perez. Maybe there isn't a sure thing 5th starter right now, and maybe Pedro will only be a shadow of his former self, but that's still waaaay better than the Mets have had in the last couple years, and they've been pretty good the last couple years.
the mets rotation is now the best in the NL. it's time to give pelfrey the number 5 slot and let him take his lumps. now if we could only find that 4th outfielder who can hit lefties. oh, and think of how good we'd look with milledge instead of church.
Best in the NL? That's debatable, though starting out with the best pitcher in baseball at the top doesn't hurt.
Pedro is a shadow of his former self and it's a stretch to expect him to start 25 games.
Maine seems solid, but his peripherals aren't exactly dominant (a little over 2:1 K/BB), so I don't really buy him as a #2.
Oliver Perez had a nice comeback, but given his history he's hardly a sure bet.
Given all that, the NL is still full of shitty rotations, so the Mets are definitely top 3 on paper right now, but I'd take the Webb/Haren duo in Arizona.
I was about to make literally this exact same post. The mets live!!
ReplyDeleteexicited but pessimistic. delgado now blows, beltran puts up great numbers for a mediocre player, reyes?, el duque??, & pedro???.
ReplyDeletespring training?!
