Brain Teaser

If me, Ben, Sol, Raju, and Joe had to finish a keg, just between the five of us, how long do you think it would take us? Note that a keg has 125 pint glasses of beer. (Note that I chose these five people as the most likely to be willing to try it. (Also note that I am not suggesting we actually try it.))

I think it would take 12 hours.

  1. i think you're suggesting you actually try it.

i think it will take you 36 hours...when you actually try it.

the reason for the extreme length of time is that i'm confident you will pass out at some point and need to finish the next day.

  2. Anything that's plausibly tryable, I'm interested in trying, and now a small part of me will always want to know how long it would take 5 of us to drink a whole keg.

I'm still a little disappointed that we didn't have the chance to go for a second tower of beer.

  3. BTW, 12 hours would mean that we're each drink about 2 pints an hour for those 12 hours. I think that after 5/6 hours of that, we'd all be in pretty rough shape. However, 36 hours seems way too long. I'd say...18 hours.

  4. Well, while I wasn't suggesting we try it, I also wasn't suggesting we don't.

How about this: to do it in 12 hours, you'd need to drink ten beers an hour. What if every hour, one person drinks six of those beers, and the other four each drink one? And then the "pole position" of six beers rotates. I think doing it that way, it could be done in twelve hours. Each person has to drink six beers twice in that span, but they get to rest at one beer/hour for four hours in between.

But when I thought up this scenario, I wasn't thinking we'd be going for time, just trying to hit the finish line. Just doing it and allowing however much time--yeah, I now think 18 hours would be about right.

  5. I think we should try it. And I will take the place of anyone who doesn't want to participate.

But, Josh F, I think your suggestion of drinking in shifts should NOT be tried, as it in essence defeats one of the purposes of the exercise, namely getting insanely drunk together. Note that I believe this is one of the points of the game and not a side effect...

  6. As long as I have food, a TV, some weed, and a bathroom...I can do my 25 pints of beer in 13 hours!

    That's what's up.

  7. True, Dave. I was thinking of ways it could be done. The way it SHOULD be done is as Sol describes.

  8. i'm with joe. a little (but growing) part of me needs to know the answer to such riddles.

sol, c'mon. you'll be pouring beer down your pants and claiming you peed yourself before you drink 25 beers in 13 hours.
